Ridge Vineyards' 2023 East Bench Zinfandel is a testament to the winery's commitment to crafting expressive, site-specific wines. Situated on the eastern benchlands of Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County, the East Bench vineyard boasts iron-rich, clay loam soils formed approximately 80 million years ago. Originally planted in the early 1900s and later abandoned, the site was revitalized by Ridge in 1999 with specially selected budwood from pre-Prohibition era vineyards. The head-trained, spur-pruned vines are organically farmed, and the 2023 vintage benefited from above-average winter rainfall, leading to a full crop. Each parcel was harvested between September 29 and October 7, then fermented using native yeasts and aged for 14 months in air-dried American oak barrels, 14% of which were new.
This 100% Zinfandel wine presents a vibrant bouquet of strawberry, clove, and vanilla on the nose. The palate unfolds with layers of raspberry, sage, chocolate, and black olive, supported by mouth-coating tannins and bright acidity, culminating in a long, satisfying finish. The wine's robust yet balanced profile makes it an excellent companion to a variety of dishes. Consider pairing it with grilled meats, such as barbecued ribs or pulled pork, to complement its fruit-forward character and spice notes. Alternatively, dishes like Toulouse sausages with herb mash or pork in garlic sauce can highlight the wine's depth and complexity.
