A deep ruby, purple color is followed by gorgeous aromas of flowers, black fruits, and kirsch. A silky-textured, medium to full-bodied, hedonistically as well as intellectually satisfying wine.
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is more closed and backward, yet has stunning currants, roasted coffee, smoked tobacco, and gravelly minerality and shows more violet and floral notes with time in the glass.
Tight and firm, with a chewy edge to the dried currant, graphite, blackberry and mineral notes. Full-bodied and intense, without being weighty, this is well-structured with a complex, persistent finish.
The bouquet smolders with spicy cumin seed, fenugreek and cinnamon. The rich, full-bodied palate delivers blackcurrant cordial and blueberry pie with iron ore on a bed of red roses and red fruit highlights.
Dark plums, black cherries, licorice, tar and smoke all take shape as the 2006 opens up in the glass. Overall, this is a supple Opus One with good complexity but less of the personality of the best wines of the year.
